The Transfiguration of Jesus: Radiant Light and Revelation

Divide:

One day, Jesus took three of his friends up a high mountain. They were Peter, James and John. The mountain was very high, and they had to walk for a long time. Phew, that was exhausting! But upstairs it was quiet and peaceful.

Something wonderful happened! Suddenly, Jesus began to shine – his face shone bright as the sun! His clothes also became quite white and shiny. The disciples were amazed with wide eyes. They had never seen anything like it!

Suddenly, two men appeared to Jesus. They were Moses and Elijah, two men who had been with God for a long time. They talked to Jesus. Peter was so surprised that he exclaimed: “Lord, it is so beautiful here! Do we want to build three huts?”

But then a bright, shining cloud came over them. A strong voice spoke out of the cloud: “This is my beloved Son, listen to him!”

When the disciples heard this, they were very afraid. They fell on her face and trembled. But then they felt a gentle hand. It was Jesus. He said, “Get up and don’t be afraid.”

The disciples looked around – Moses and Elijah had disappeared. Only Jesus was still there. Slowly they descended the mountain with him, their hearts full of joy. They had seen that Jesus really is God’s Son!

Scripture

The story of the transfiguration of Jesus can be found in Matthew 17:1-8:

“And after six days Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John with him and led them aside to a high mountain. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as the light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, speaking to him. Then Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here.” If you will, we will build three tabernacles here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice [kam] out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were very afraid. And Jesus came up and touched them, saying, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” But when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus alone.”
