In a faraway country lived a royal official. He heard about a special man named Jesus who performed many miracles and spoke of God’s love. One day, the official was very sad because his young son was seriously ill. He didn’t know what to do anymore and was very afraid for his son.
The official heard that Jesus had come to the city of Cana in Galilee. It was the same city where Jesus had turned water into wine. Full of hope and despite the long journey, he immediately set off for Jesus. He knew that Jesus was the only one who could help his Son.
When the official found Jesus, he urged him, “Lord, please come down and heal my son before he dies!” The official firmly believed that Jesus could save his son if only he were with him.
But Jesus looked at him lovingly and said, “Go home. Your son is alive.” The official was surprised, but also full of faith. Jesus had not even seen the place where his son lay. But the man felt in his heart that he could trust Jesus.
Full of hope, the officer made his way home. On the way his servants were already coming to meet him. They were very excited and shouted, “Your son is alive! He’s fine again!” The officer quickly asked, “When did it get better?” The servants answered, “Yesterday, about the seventh hour, the fever left him.”
Then the official remembered that it was exactly the time when Jesus had told him that his son would live. He was full of joy and immediately went back to his family. He told everyone what Jesus had done. Because of this miraculous sign, many people trusted in Jesus more than ever and believed in Him.
Message of history
Jesus shows us that He is always with us, even if we cannot see Him. If we trust in Him, anything can become possible.
Bible passage
The story of Jesus healing the son of a royal official is found in John 4:46-54. Here is the text from the Schlachter 2000 translation:
“Now Jesus came back to Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son was sick in Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went to him and begged him to come down and heal his son; for he was dying. Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you do not believe.” The royal official said to him, “Lord, come down before my child dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go, your Son lives.” And man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went. And while he was still going down, his servants came to meet him and told him, saying, “Your son is alive!” Then he inquired of them about the hour in which he had become better. They said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. Then the Father realized that it had happened at the same hour when Jesus had said to him, “Your Son lives!” And he believed with all his house. Jesus again did this second sign when he came from Judea to Galilee.”
