One day Jesus was on his way, and he came to a village. In this village lived two sisters named Martha and Maria. They were very kind women, and they were very happy when Jesus came by. They invited him to eat at their home.
Martha immediately began to prepare the meal. She ran back and forth to make everything nice and delicious. She wanted Jesus to feel comfortable with them. Mary, on the other hand, sat down directly next to Jesus and listened to him. She wanted to be very close to him and hear all his words.
Martha worked very hard, but at some point she became quite tired and a bit angry. “Jesus,” she said, “don’t you care that my sister lets me do all the work alone? Tell her to help me!”
Jesus looked lovingly at Martha and said, “Martha, Martha, you worry about so many things. But only one thing is really important. Maria made the best choice. She is very close to me and listens to my words.”
Jesus wanted Martha to understand that it is good to listen to him and spend time with him. Both sisters were important to him, but he wanted them to know that love and time with God are important.
Message of history
It’s nice to be diligent, but it’s also very important to spend time with God and listen to Him.
Bible passage
The story of Jesus with Martha and Mary is found in Luke 10:38-42:
“Now it came to pass, as they were going on, that he came to a village; and a woman named Martha took him into her house. And she had a sister, named Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and listened to his word. Marta, however, had a lot to do with the waitress. And she came up and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister leaves me alone to serve?” Tell her to help me! But Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha!” You worry and worry about many things; but one thing is need. Mary, however, has chosen the good part; that should not be taken away from her.”
