The First Miracle: Water to Wine – Jesus’ Miracle at Cana

Divide:

One day, a wedding was celebrated in a small village called Cana. A wedding is a big celebration where a bride and groom get married and all the people dance and have a lot of fun. Jesus was there with his friends, the disciples, and his mother, Mary, was also there.

Everyone had a lot of fun, but then something happened! The wine ran out. Oh no! Wine was a drink that the big people liked to drink at celebrations. How were they supposed to celebrate without wine?

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was worried. She came to Jesus and said, “The wine is gone.” Jesus knew that it was not yet the time to become famous, but he was a dear one, and Mary asked him for help. So he said to the servants, “Fill the big jars there with water.”

The servants listened to Jesus and filled the jars to the brim with water. Then Jesus said, “Scoop something out and bring it to the man who organizes the feast.” The servants did as Jesus said.

The festival director tasted the drink. He couldn’t believe it. Water had become delicious wine! It was the best wine he had ever tasted. No one knew that it was Jesus who had transformed the water, but the servants and disciples knew it and were very surprised and glad.

All continued to rejoice with the bride and groom, and the feast was saved. That was the first miracle that Jesus did, and it showed that he was very special, because God gave him the strength to do it.

Message of history

Jesus takes care of us and helps us, even with small problems! God makes miracles possible and is happy when we celebrate together.

Bible passage

Here is the story of the first miracle in which Jesus turns water into wine, in John 2:1-11 from the Slaughter 2000 translation:

John 2:1-11: “And on the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus was also invited to the wedding and his disciples. And when there was a shortage of wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine!” Jesus said to her, “Woman, what have I to do with you?” My hour has not yet come! His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” But there were six stone water jugs placed there, according to the purification custom of the Jews, each of which held two or three buckets. Jesus said to them, “Fill the water jars with water.” And they filled it to the top. And he said to them, “Draw now and bring it to the steward.” And they brought it. But as soon as the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and he did not know where it came from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew it, the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone sets the good wine first, and when they have become drunk, then the lesser; you have kept the good wine until now! Jesus performed this first sign at Cana in Galilee and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.”
