On a fine day, Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee. The sun was shining, and the water was glistening. Many people were employed there. Some fished, others cleaned their nets. Jesus walked along the shore and watched all the different people at work.
Then Jesus saw two brothers, Simon, who was also called Peter, and Andrew. They were fishermen and stood in the water to cast their nets. Jesus called out to them: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men!” This meant that they would tell people about God’s love and bring them to God.
Simon and Andreas looked at each other. They felt that Jesus was someone very special and that it was important to follow Him. Without hesitation, they left their nets behind and followed Jesus. They had great faith in Him and dared to leave their previous lives behind.
Jesus continued to walk along the lake and soon saw two more brothers. Their names were James and John. These two sat in the boat with their father Zebedee and repaired their nets. They were also fishermen.
Jesus also called them: “Follow me!” James and John heard Jesus’ call and knew that they were also up to something special. They got out of the boat, leaving their father and work behind, and followed Jesus.
So Simon, Andrew, James and John became the first disciples of Jesus. They chose to be with Him, to learn from Him, and to bring the good news of God’s love to the world. The disciples began a new adventure with Jesus and experienced many wonderful things at His side.
Message of history
When Jesus calls us, we can trust and follow Him, because He has a wonderful plan for our lives.
Bible passage
The scripture that describes how Jesus calls the disciples can be found in Matthew 4:18-22:
“And as Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting the net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they immediately left the nets and followed him. And as he went on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John, in the ship with their father Zebedee, mending their nets; and he called them. So they immediately left the ship and their father and followed him.”
