Grandma and the colorful garden
On a warm spring morning, Tom and Hanna drove to grandma’s house full of anticipation. Today was a special day – a garden day! Grandma had invited them to plant flowers together and tend to the small vegetable garden. When they arrived, their friends Lukas and Emma were already waiting for them. The garden was full of buzzing bees, chirping birds and fragrant flowers.
“Come here, my dears!”, Grandma greeted her with a smile. “Today we are going to beautify the garden! Everyone gets a task.”
Tom was given a small shovel to plant new flowers. Hanna and Emma helped Grandma remove wilted leaves, while Lukas watered the bed with a small watering can.
“Look, these sunflowers!” shouted Hanna enthusiastically. “They’re as big as if they’re touching the sky!”
“Yes, my dear,” said Grandma, “God’s creation is wonderful! Each plant has its place and its task. The flowers give the bees food, the bees help the plants to grow, and even the rain knows exactly when to come.”
Suddenly Emma frowned. “But sometimes things go wrong, don’t they? Last week, a strong wind bent over the tree in our yard…”
Grandma nodded. “Yes, that’s right. But something good can also grow from challenges. We just have to rely on God.”
Then she put her gloves aside and sat down on the bench. “Come, let’s sit down for a moment and thank God for this beautiful day.”
They all gathered around Grandma, closed their eyes, and Tom said:
“Dear God, thank you for the wonderful nature you give us. Help us to take good care of them and treat them with joy and respect. Just as you keep us humans together, you also help plants to grow together. Amen.”
“Amen!” the group repeated quietly.
When they went back to work, Emma had a special thought. “It’s a bit like the Bible story of the seeds that fall on good soil. If we take good care of the plants, they will grow strongly!”
“Exactly!” said Grandma contentedly and stroked Emma’s hair.
At the end of the day, the children proudly looked at their work. The garden was more colorful, the beds neatly tended and everywhere it was buzzing and crawling with life.
“The garden is like our friendship,” said Hanna with a smile. “We have to take care of it so that it grows and blooms.”
“And God helps us!” added Tom.
With a happy smile, the children said goodbye to grandma that evening – with earth on their hands, but joy in their hearts. The colorful garden would always remind her of this beautiful day and of God’s wonderful creation. 🌿🌻
Bible passage
A fitting biblical passage that connects nature and generations is
Psalm 145:4 (Schlachter 2000):
“Let one generation praise your works to another, and declare your mighty deeds.”
This passage expresses how faith and creation are passed down through generations – how grandma shows the children the garden and they are connected to each other through prayer.
